Spencer, IA (KICD)--A large crowd gathered at the Clay County Regional Events Center Thursday evening to honor Spencer's Citizen of the Year. The award, presented annually by the Spencer Daily Reporter, was given this year to Division 3 Iowa-Nebraska Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor Paul Brenner who spoke with KICD News about receiving the award which was given to him for his volunteerism to community projects. He says "I pretty much get involved in these things because well I do it for my own amusement. I get to participate in projects with what is always a great group of people. It does take a little time but it's a lot of fun and for me that is my goal to take on whatever project that is and have fun with it."
Spirit Lake, IA (KICD)--A Thursday traffic stop by Spirit Lake Police lands an Arnolds Park man in jail on drug charges. 29-year-old James Long was initially taken into custody for an outstanding Dickinson County warrant as well as driving with a barred and suspended license. Further investigation led to the discovery of over a half pound of illegal mushrooms, approximately 130 grams of pot, a digital scale, and drug paraphernalia for which he was charged with possession of. Two additional counts of failure to affix a drug tax stamp and possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver were tacked on. Over $1,000 in cash was seized.
Spencer, IA (KICD)--Road work in Clay County will result in single lane traffic on Highway 18 over the next few months. Starting this Monday Hot-mix asphalt resurfacing on 18 between Clay County Road B-19 and Highway 71 near Spencer will restrict traffic to one lane. Motorists will be assisted through the work zone with flaggers and a pilot car, and should expect intermittent lane closures and changing traffic patterns. The roadway will be returned to normal traffic patterns when workers are not present. The work is scheduled to be completed on July 29th weather permitting according to the Iowa DOT.
Dakota City, IA (AP) -- Trial for a Minnesota teenager charged in the slayings of two Iowa convenience store clerks last fall has been moved to Carroll County. Michael Swanson, of St. Louis Park, Minn., is charged as an adult with first-degree murder and robbery in Kossuth and Humboldt counties. He's accused of killing a clerk in Algona on Nov. 15, then driving to Humboldt and killing another clerk. The 17-year-old's attorney, Charles Kenville, asked that the first of two trials, set for June 20, be moved from Humboldt County to western Iowa because of extensive publicity. Prosecutors didn't oppose the request. The Fort Dodge Messenger reports that the trial is still set to begin June 20. The second trial is scheduled for July 27 in Kossuth County.
(Spencer, IA) -- Nearly 17,000 dollars was raised Saturday afternoon at the Third Annual Northwest Iowa Polar Plunge. Special Olympics of Iowa Representative Jeanette Steinfelt says there were 16 teams that took the plunge in rather chilly temperatures. Prizes were handed out at the conclusion -- best individual costume went to Steven Hibbs; best team costumes went to the Trinity Treaders. The most money raised by an individual was Megan Schoning, raising $921. The most money raised online was $202 by Kari Etherington. The youngest individual to raise money was Megan Schoning and also Gaige Heissel, raising $155.
